About Luce Foundation Center for American Art

The Luce Foundation Center for American Art is the Smithsonian American Art Museum's visible art storage and study center, occupying 24,000 square feet on the third and fourth floors of the west wing of the historic Patent Office Building at 8th and G Streets NW in Washington, DC. The building was constructed between 1836 and 1868, became a National Historic Landmark in 1965, and reopened in 2006 with the Luce Foundation Center in the west wing's upper floors. Three levels of the museum's painting, sculpture, folk art and craft collections are displayed in floor-to-ceiling glass cases. The architectural interior includes elaborate columns, bronze railings, a multicolored marble floor, large windows and a city-block-long skylight. The space is presented for events, with reception and seated formats available.
