University Chapel and Galleries
Wedding venue in Lexington, Virginia

About University Chapel and Galleries
University Chapel, completed in 1868 at the request of Robert E. Lee and known as Lee Chapel until it was renamed University Chapel, is a brick and native limestone building on the Washington and Lee University campus in Lexington, Virginia. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. The main-floor auditorium has been restored to an unadorned design and seats 520 people across the main floor and balcony. A partition on the stage separates it from the 1883 annex that holds the Recumbent Lee statue, and both spaces are open to the public. The chapel hosts university events, lectures and performances, and its auditorium may be reserved for weddings, memorial services and funerals under university conditions. The lower level holds the Chapel Galleries: the Foundations & Frameworks exhibition on the building's history, the rotating Setting the Stage gallery, President Lee's preserved office with original furnishings, and the Lee Family Mausoleum, which contains the remains of more than 20 Lee family members. Visitors may enter from the lower or main level. The stage, upper antechamber and Statuary Chamber are not wheelchair accessible, while the auditorium and lower levels are. Visiting hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the building is closed on university holidays.
