Money IQ

The invoice, the fine print, the line that looks like a tip.

Money IQ is for whoever is signing things. Every lesson in here was learned by someone reading an invoice too late. Read it early instead. Right or wrong, each question you get through moves you up this ladder. The top is Dove, same as everywhere, and I am still the standard.

The 7 questions

  • The tablecloths — Ten tables. Rent them finished, or buy them and press them yourself. I have feelings about this.
  • The line that looks like a tip — The 22% looks like a tip. It might not be. Nobody at the tasting will bring it up.
  • The math nobody did — $95 a head, 120 guests, a 22% service charge. Slide to what that one line costs. Nobody does this at the tasting.
  • Six balances, one month — Venue, caterer, photographer, DJ, florist, rentals. Each contract has a “balance due” line.
  • The envelopes — The hair and makeup team did six heads before nine a.m. Tipping is customary. Slide to the percent.
  • The certificate of insurance — The venue wants a certificate of insurance before your date. You said you’d look into it.
  • The number about other people — The Knot asked thousands of couples what their 2024 wedding cost. Slide to the average.

Every Money IQ question is pre-written: Belle asks, you answer, she tells you the truth about the answer you picked, and the careful version waits on Boards. Your ladder here is your own; a subject becomes its own IQ at 3 questions.
