About National Civil Rights Museum
The National Civil Rights Museum occupies the former Lorraine Motel at 450 Mulberry Street in downtown Memphis, Tennessee, the site where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. The Lorraine Motel is designated a historic site by the Tennessee Historical Commission. The campus includes an outdoor courtyard used for public commemorations and Founders Park, which has reopened as part of the expanded outdoor campus. Indoor galleries present civil rights history through roughly 260 artifacts, more than 40 films, oral histories and interactive media. The Legacy Building was reopened in May 2026 with the reimagined Legacy Experience, which covers civil rights history from 1968 to the present. Facility rental space is offered to non-profit, social and civic organizations, corporations and businesses for corporate events, conferences, receptions, dinners, business meetings, holiday parties, class reunions and family gatherings. The museum reserves the right to decline events that do not align with its mission. Requests are made through an inquiry form or by contacting the rental coordinator, and a request is not a reservation until it is completed by phone. The museum is open Monday and Wednesday through Sunday and is closed on Tuesdays. Free parking is available for guests in the visitor lot entered by turning north on Mulberry Street from G.E. Patterson Avenue. Tour guide and sign-language interpretation can be arranged with two weeks' notice, and tour guide interpretation for visually impaired guests with 48 hours' notice.
