The Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad Museum occupies the historic Railway Express Agency building beside the Salinas Amtrak station. The building was restored with the City of Salinas to its 1940s appearance. The museum's centerpiece is an interactive HO scale layout and diorama that recreates the rail lines of the Monterey and Salinas Valley in the 1950s and 1960s, from King City to Watsonville, with steam and diesel power. Small signs at landmarks provide historical information, and visitors can search the layout in a scavenger hunt. Historic rail equipment is also displayed, including a Southern Pacific steam locomotive, a 1923 refrigerator car, a 1924 Railway Post Office/Railway Express Agency car and a 1916 Southern Pacific caboose. Open House is held on the first full weekend (Saturday and Sunday) of each month, excluding holidays, from 10am to 4pm, with admission free to the public. Paid members may operate trains freely during Open House, and guests may operate guest trains under posted guidelines. The museum also accommodates receptions, birthday parties, school field trips and family outings by appointment, and works with hosts on scheduling and expected numbers of guests.
