About Hartness House
The Hartness House is a historic mansion inn in Springfield, built in the early 1900s by inventor, astronomer and politician James Hartness. Its underground tunnels were conceived as a private office and now provide access to an equatorial turret telescope designed by Hartness; the tunnels also house the Hartness-Porter Museum of Amateur Telescope Making.
