Just engaged? The first five decisions, in order
Budget range, rough guest count, season, venue, then the vendors who book out first.
Congratulations. Start with these five connected decisions; revisit them together as quotes and priorities become clearer. There is no universal booking order for every wedding.
- A budget range. Agree what you can spend, who is contributing and when that money will be available. Keep required fees and a contingency visible.
- A rough guest count. Draft the people you hope to invite. Check seated capacity with dining, dancing and accessible circulation, rather than assuming everyone will decline.
- A season or date window. Decide which dates are flexible and which people or traditions matter most. Ask the actual venue and vendors about availability.
- A workable venue. Compare the complete cost, access, weather backup and rules before signing. A venue only fixes the date once its booking is confirmed.
- The people you most need. A planner, photographer, caterer or musician may shape the rest of the plan. Confirm scope and written terms before paying a deposit.

Try it as a Bride IQ question
- The date is the date — The venue said “looks good!” on the phone. The cardstock is gorgeous and it’s right there.
Try it as a Groom IQ question
- The suit and the ten pounds — You’ll order it after you lose the weight. The weight has heard this before.
- Six months, says the border — Your passport is fine. It expires right after you get home. The country you’re visiting may disagree.
