Outdoor wedding in Michigan? Plan for rain (and bugs)

A workable weather backup, safe lightning shelter and a named person who can make the call.

Build the weather backup as a real event plan, with enough room, staff, accessible routes and time to use it. Rain comfort and lightning safety are different questions.

Confirm shelter and the decision process

  • Walk the backup layout with the venue: seated capacity, access, toilets, catering, power and safe routes. A tent is not a safe lightning shelter.
  • Name the weather monitor and the lead who can stop outdoor activity. Agree earlier planning deadlines with suppliers, while retaining an immediate safety response on the day.
  • The National Weather Service advises moving to a substantial building or an enclosed metal-topped vehicle when thunder is heard, and waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside. Plan enough suitable shelter for everyone.

Cover comfort and logistics

Ask the venue and rental team about wind limits, anchoring, drainage, wet ground, heat, cold and protected power. Follow the actual equipment and site safety instructions; do not improvise tent installation or heaters.

Provide accessible alternate routes and clear guest communication. Discuss insects, sunscreen and other comfort measures with the venue without treating a basket of supplies as the weather plan.

Keep both layout options and the move instructions together. Confirm the alternate space is actually reserved; a drawing or directory label is not a booking guarantee.
